SAE is an acronym for the "Society of Automotive Engineers" and when used in conjunction with tool grade or measurement (not oil), is a standardized unit of non-metric measurement. Bolts that thread into metal tend to be SAE. Most all of them in metal (Steel / Iron) are SAE, you may find a few metric. The bolts that go in Aluminum (Metric) tend to have more threads per MM, to insure a better fit, and apply less stress to the soft aluminum over a set length.
